How to convert to prepaid electricity?

If you currently have an electrical supply from the City of Cape Town municipality with a credit meter (receiving an account for electricity) and wish to convert to a prepaid meter you are at the right place.

Requirements

The registered owner or proxy can apply for the conversion (can be done via email).

If the property is owned by a Trust a copy of the Trust documents and a copy the ID book / passport of the person who will be signing on behalf of the trust. will be required.

If the property is owned by a company a letter of proxy from the company's board of directors will be required, giving the person doing the application authority to sign on behalf of the company. A copy the ID book / passport of the person who will be signing on behalf of the company.

If the property is a sectional title unit, a letter from the body corporate will be required stating that they are aware that a prepaid meter is being installed at the specific unit.

Other documents may be requested in special cases.

All accounts for all properties owned by the applicant in the City of Cape Town area must be paid in full or have a arrangement with the council to pay it off (we can assist with these arrangements if required)

Your electricity supply must not exceed 400V / 100A per phase to have a prepaid meter installed at this stage.

Procedures

ED Installations will need to be contacted for a quotation for the preparation work for the installation of the prepaid meter (for single phase 60A prepaid meter mounted next to the existing main distribution board. the cost will be R2200) Anything other than this will need to be quoted on separately (quotations are at no charge if the property can be inspected during our normal operating hours).

If you accept the quotation, the owner must complete the City of Cape Town "Application for a new or modified electricity supply service" form and email it, with a copy of hi s/ her ID book / passport and other relevant documentation (if required) to edinstallations@hotmail.com and we will submit the application to the City of Cape Town on your behalf for processing.

The council will process the application and forward a quotation for their side of the work if all the requirement are met.

Once the owner has received the quotation and approves it, payment can be made to the City of Cape Town by the owner, either by EFT, Cash or Cheque. Proof of payment can then be sent to edinstallations@hotmail.com

We will make arrangements with the owner / tenant to gain access to the property to do the preparation work for the prepaid meter (this usually is a 2 hour process and the electricity will be off for about 20min of the 2 hours). After this the electricity supply will function normally.

An invoice will be sent to the owner for the preparation work as per quote supplied by ED Installations.

A Certificate of Compliance will be issued to the City of Cape Town for the completed work.

The electrical inspector of the relevant area can be contacted by us or the owner/tenant (whatever is easier for you) to arrange an appointment for the prepaid meter to be fitted.

The prepaid meter will be fitted on the arranged time and date and the installation will be on prepaid electricity from here on (the prepaid meter is preloaded with 6 units (KWh) for testing purposes, so electricity will need to be purchased shortly after the final installation.

Electricity can be purchased at most supermarkets / convenience stores and on-line at www.ibuy.co.za

A final reading will be taken by CoCT from the old "credit meter" and a final account will be sent to the owner for the electricity used from the last account up to the point of the prepaid meter commissioning.

In the unfortunate event of the prepaid meter ever going faulty due to "normal wear and tear" the City of Cape Town will repair / replace it at no charge, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The City of Cape Town's "Call Centre" can be contacted on 0860 103 089 or via SMS on 31220 (24/7) for any faults.
